A little beach time is always well deserved, but even more so when you’ve had a chance to get a workout in beforehand. Exercising before the beach somehow makes a beach chair more comfortable and the saltwater even more refreshing. Here are some of our favorite ways to get active before a beach day.

Sweat It Out at Home

If you’re trying to get to the beach by late morning, you might not have time to go to the gym. Save some time before your beach day and try an in-home workout instead! Start by clearing a space somewhere in your home so you have enough room to move around, and then throw on a good pair of sneakers and your most comfortable men’s swim trunks so you can head straight to the beach afterward! Once your space is set up, it’s time to choose your workout. For a high intensity workout option, consider a quick 20 to 30 minutes of cardio exercises. Alternate rounds of jumping jacks, high knees, burpees and other exercises that will get your heart rate up quickly. Design your own cardio circuit and make it part of your pre-beach routine this summer.

When stretching, strength and an overall slower pace are desired, you might like a yoga- and pilates-based workout instead of cardio. You can easily make your home into a serene yoga studio by rolling out a yoga mat or towel, minimizing any distracting sounds and dimming the lights. From there, work through your favorite yoga poses and try a few new ones. This will get your body moving and stretching as a warmup. From there, focus on core exercises like crunches, planking and push-ups that work the muscles and build strength. Be sure to go at your own pace and modify exercises as needed.

Work Out and About

Sometimes an outdoor workout feels more appropriate before the beach. In this case, it’s always worth it to look for parks, fields and other outdoor workout-friendly spaces near the beach for convenience and timeliness. Grab some friends and get your abs, arms and legs looking right before a game of beach volleyball with alternating rounds of sprints, push-ups and sit-ups. 

If you’re exercising in the sun, be sure to wear a protective beach shirt or rash guard, because it’s never fun to get sunburn before you even get to the beach. Enjoy a workout with friends and then head to the beach together for a sunny afternoon!
